UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss, or anger that significantly impact daily life.  In Australia, roughly 14% of adults experience anxiety disorders annually, while depression affects around 6%.

Feeling down occasionally is normal. However, if these feelings persist and interfere with your daily routine, it could be depression.

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of depression, but some common ones include:

  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities

  • Social withdrawal

  • Unfounded feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • Changes in appetite (increased or decreased)

  • Excessive fatigue

  • Significant changes in sleep patterns (sleeping too much or too little)

  • Suicidal thoughts

SEEKING HELP:

It is important to note that these symptoms can also occur with other conditions. If you suspect depression, seeking professional help from a qualified mental health professional is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
